It’s a Great Day at ______! How may I help you?

“Ya’ll don’t know my struggle. Ya’ll can't match my hustle. You can’t catch my hustle. You can’t fathom my love.”

– Kanye West, “Spaceship”

Fortunately I was able to secure a job after 6 months of unemployment. I am currently at Coach in Training at Hibbett Sports. It is not the most glamorous job in the world, but I chose to take the road less traveled and the one which would allow me to avoid living in a cardboard box. My appetite to join the sport management industry is more insatiable than ever. In the Buddhist religion suffering is seen as the journey and a pivotal experience in order to achieve a breakthrough. I am not afraid to say that I am suffering. Often I wonder if I am truly going to make a living working in the industry which houses my passion. After a tough Back to School rush and 3 months of working over 50 hours a week, my toes are numb as is my spirit, which is partially broken. That said I will NOT give up.

Over the past 3 months I have been able to learn so much about how to interact with many groups of people. Each day I encounters a different type of customer. Some are far more pleasant than others, but even the most difficult ones have taught me something. Even if it is as simple as managing my anger. In such a short time I am now able to close and open the store by myself, answer a plethora of questions, and have a great grasp on the merchandise (footwear, equipment, and apparel) in our store. My supervisor and manager are great teachers and guides who have shared a generous amount of gems, time, and patience with me. I am very fortunate in that regard. It is because to this learning environment that I realize that this period in my life is a great time to learn and grow.

Now that we currently almost of have a full staff people on staff, after going most of the summer with 5, a focus can finally be put on developing myself as a manager. This will present more challenges but I look forward to them. It will be interesting to see how it will shape me as a person and a leader. Everything I can gain from this experience will be grabbed by my brain like I am in one of those money machines.
