It’s almost been a month since graduation and I’m in the process assimilating to professional life. I am grateful to have the resources of pay off my rent for the rest of my lease term, which gives me a good peace of mind. I would be lying if I said that I was not nervous or afraid, but at the same time I have never felt freer in my life. With that said I am excited to jump into the mix and apply for jobs. My goal is to secure a job in Richmond, Virginia. The city is so vibrant and charming. Unfortunately I have not made any contacts in the sport world there, but I am actively seeking them out. If you know me as a person, then you know I have never taken the easiest paths so my decision to pursue a career in sport management comes as no surprise. While I am more passionate about this field and I love that it allows me to utilize all three of my degrees, it is not an easy field to break into unless you know someone who knows someone.
As a person who is also at a disadvantage because I am fairly new to the sport management world, the task at hand can appear overwhelming. Then again so was the challenge of attending college 6 years ago. I refuse to get down on myself or allow the opinions of others pertaining to my career progress make me feel bad about where I am in life. If a person can be courageous enough to obtain three degrees (1 bachelors and 2 masters) then they most certainly can free themselves enough to go after their dreams. Even if this process takes time, it is fine with me. Putting in hard work and patience to create the life you’ve always wanted and to work for an organization that feeds your passion, no matter how many hours you put into your job, is completely worth it to me. Too many of my peers latch onto any job in the professional world and that is just not my style. One of the most inspiring stories I’ve heard was from ECU’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach Heather Macy. She discussed her first big job out of college, which did not pay nor was as huge as her current job, but how grateful she was to be doing something that she loved. So much so that she did it gladly for roughly $10,000 per year and wanted to be and was there at 4am starting work for the day. That’s what I am seeking. I honestly want to make enough money to pay for rent, utilities, food, and student loans after that, I’m okay. The most attractive characteristic of any job offer I receive, will be the opportunity and the ability to grow in my job position. I want to become adept so that I can enhance the talent that I bring within an organization to better it a whole.
